In 1995, Charlie Chiampou of Chiampou Travis Besaw & Kershner interviewed a young John Gavigan for an accounting position at his firm.

Chiampou told Gavigan he was going to make a “terrible accountant.” It was a joke, of course, given to an outgoing young man who displayed the skills to be a dynamite sales executive. But the overriding context of Chiampou’s statement, that a young accountant spends much time crunching numbers and that Gavigan could perhaps make better use of his skills, stuck.

Instead, Gavigan has become a successful entrepreneur and, as executive director at 43North, a prominent member of Buffalo’s startup community. He discusses his path in this week’s Buffalo TechCast.
