At the beginning of the 21st century, the health care and education sectors in Buffalo emerged as seemingly resistant to the effects of the economy. In a desire to build upon that strength, a group of community leaders, elected officials, and the heads of the region’s health care and medical education institutions co-located in downtown Buffalo, banded together in 2001 to create a not-for-profit organization called the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC), Inc. BNMC, Inc. was tasked with turning a then 70-acre section of downtown Buffalo into a cohesive campus and fostering collaboration and planning among its member institutions.
Today the Medical Campus is home to 10 major institutions and more than 75 public and private companies, all located on 120-acres. More than a collective of clinical care, medical education, and research institutions, the BNMC has become an integral part of a rising, diverse neighborhood. Bordered by historic Allentown, the Fruit Belt, and downtown Buffalo, the BNMC has cultivated a vision for a sustainable community; one where economic growth benefits all – as expressed in its “four neighborhoods, one community” plan; one that encompasses, not only jobs and economic activity, but energy infrastructure, entrepreneurship, alternative transportation, access to healthy food and physical health, education and youth.
Thanks to extraordinary leadership and broad local, state and national support, the BNMC has succeeded to become an engine of growth, innovation, and job creation; a case example in successful public-private partnerships; and a proof point for an urban revitalization process based on principles of mutuality.
