Buffalo is the prize

Winners of 43North get some hefty cash prizes, mentorship, incubator space, tax breaks and a boatload of marketing exposure. But they also get Buffalo, and many would say that’s a prize in itself.

Why? Because Buffalo is a city on the rise.

It starts with us returning to our proud roots of innovation and entrepreneurship. Drive around the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and you’ll see hundreds of millions of dollars in investment in groundbreaking medical research – from Roswell Park Cancer Institute to the Jacobs Institute to the Hauptman Woodward Medical Research Institute to the new University at Buffalo School of Medicine. You’ll also find 43North’s incubator here, where we share space with Z80 Labs and stand alongside the dig co-working space.

As you work your way around the city, you’ll see other signs of Buffalo’s economic rebirth – from the soon-to-be-opened Solar City plant in South Buffalo (which will be the largest solar panel manufacturing facility in the Western Hemisphere) to the recently expanded headquarters for Bak USA on the East Side, where they’re building rugged laptops and tablets. Helping to drive much of this recent upswing has been Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s visionary Buffalo Billion initiative – an unprecedented $1 billion investment in Buffalo’s economy.

Want to talk about cost of living? Sure, but let’s break that up. We compete pretty well on cost (Forbes has us as the 3rd most affordable city in the country) but we’ve also got the living half down. From hip neighborhoods like the Elmwood Village, Allentown, Hertel Avenue and Larkinville; to a reborn waterfront; to world-class modern and contemporary art at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery; to masterworks of Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, HH Richardson and Frederick Law Olmsted; to Bills football, Sabres hockey and Bisons baseball; to a thriving music and nightlife scene; to hundreds of killer independent restaurants and food trucks, Buffalo is colorful, bold and refreshingly unpretentious.

Most importantly, Buffalo has welcomed our winners with open arms – we’ve celebrated their wins, offered them a hand when they’ve fallen and treated them like rock stars – from direct access to our business and community leaders to behind-the-scenes looks at our cultural gems and attractions.
